All eyes on job numbers

Saskatchewan remains a good place for job seekers.

This week is one that will provide something of a snapshot of the labor market this summer across the country and here in the province. The first reading is the job vacancy report which looks at the marketplace in June as we headed into summer. The second report at the end of the week is the jobs report for August which details what actually happened from June to September.

The June report showed Saskatchewan with more than 15,000 unfilled jobs. In other words, employers had created and posted the positions but had not yet filled them. That represents about three-percent of the workforce which ranked us number three in the country behind Alberta and Nova Scotia.

This is not unusual for Saskatchewan as we are usually among the top provinces when it comes to a need for additional workers to meet labor demand. Employers have responded by offering higher wages. The average weekly wage in Saskatchewan rose by almost $50 from a year ago or nearly 4-percent.
