Automotive sales in Saskatchewan growing

The volume of new cars and trucks leaving automotive dealerships in this province continues to grow.

Four thousand units a month… that’s one of the benchmarks in the monthly report on sales of new vehicles. In 2023, Saskatchewan motor dealers sold more than 4,000 in a month four times. This year, they exceeded the 4,000 units month in each of the first five months.

In short, purchasers are picking up somewhere between 500 and 1,000 more new vehicles every month in 2024 compared to 2023.

And this might help in delineating how much stronger this year has been. Sales of new trucks alone exceeded the 4,000-unit benchmark four times by the end of July. Trucks include half-tons, SUVs and vans in the StatsCan data. Passenger vehicles such as sedans represent a small share of the new vehicle market these days with sales between 150 and 400 units a month.

Sales of new vehicles also offer some insight into the mood of consumers with upswings pointing to a high degree of confidence in their medium to long term outlook.
