Saskatchewan is a beer drinking province but we’re rapidly becoming specialty drink consumers.
StatsCanada has tallied the amount of money governments in this country make off the sale of booze and cannabis. And through that work, they can determine how much of each is consumed in the various provinces, providing some insight into local or regional social drinking, and now toking, habits.
Saskatchewan residents lean heavily towards beer when making their purchases.
Suds hold a 44-percent market share of all booze sold in the province. Only Newfoundland and Labrador is higher. At the other end of the scale, we are least likely to consume wine as it holds a market share of just under 15-percent.
Finally, spirits hold just under 30-percent market share in Saskatchewan which is comparable to most regions of the country. But where we are seeing a new trend is the relatively new category of ciders, coolers and the like holding a 15-percent market share.
Not only is that the highest percentage in the country but it explains why we are seeing so many speciality products in liquor stores.
