The pace of new building construction in the province is rising.
According to StatsCanada’s new figures for construction values to the end of April puts the province’s investment in new structures about $80 million ahead of the same month last year. That’s a jump of roughly 20-percent.
With much of the focus at the policy level centred on residential construction, Saskatchewan home builders seem to be doing their part of alleviate shortages. Expenditures in the residential category rose by $30 million which is roughly 15-percent compared to April a year ago.
And the bulk of it is on single-family units …$170 million compared to $97 million for multi-family construction.
Non-residential construction, which includes commercial, industrial and institutional buildings, was running ahead of last year as well: $184 million compared to $160 million.
Commercial and industrial were roughly comparable to the same period a year earlier: $25 million for industrial and $80 million in the commercial category. But institutional – which is principally government – was up sharply with government buildings tripling and schools up more than 60-percent.
