Canada’s dependance on global markets was clearly on display when the Prime Minister took to the podium at Davos yesterday.
Adding to his comments about a New World Order, Mark Carney said traditional trading patterns have been ruptured so we have to take action to defend ourselves by building our customer base with new clients.
That’s a message we’ve been hearing for a year or so but it is now being amplified as businesses are being called upon to think differently about their sales efforts.
Simply put Canada, and even more Saskatchewan, are trading jurisdictions. We are highly productive with a small population base so we don’t have much of a domestic market. That means we must find buyers beyond our borders to purchase our output.
The prime minister – with deals in China and Qatar in just the last ten days – is putting an exclamation mark on that. And the message for business, especially smaller and mid-sized ones, is to be wary of selling to only one customer. Jumping on a trade mission may just be the best strategic plan of 2026.
