Canadians choosing to stay here for summer vacations

If there’s one segment of the economy that is going to get a well-deserved boost this summer, it is tourism and, more specifically, small businesses operating in the tourism field.

That is the primary finding of a survey conducted for TD Bank. The financial institution was interested in finding out how Canadians were going to be spending their summer holidays, especially in light of the clear trend away from visiting American destinations this year.

What they found is that 90-percent of the respondents strongly favor the notion of supporting local business this year, particularly small business operators.

Three-quarters plan to conduct extensive research into domestic destinations and attractions in advance with two-thirds intending to visit a unique or different site to show that support with their tourism dollars.

Also high on the list of priorities this year is cottage country, particularly among younger tourists who add that visiting or supporting local small businesses in resort areas is part of their summer of protest against visiting the US.
