Community creates investment opportunity to boost local economy

The Town of Kerrobert is ploughing some new ground in a bid to spark new economic activity in the picturesque west-central Saskatchewan community.

The town prides itself as being ‘On the Rise’ and has decided to put its money where its slogan is with the creation of KGIC – Kerrobert Growth Investment Co-operative.

With more than a year of planning and work, it secured approval of the provincial Securities Commission to raise up to a million dollars that will be devoted to equity investments in local businesses or business infrastructure.

The vibrant community added about 100 new residents in the past 18 months and finds itself short of both houses and commercial buildings to accommodate new enterprises. The local co-op, which was officially launched last week and has begun raising seed money, says developing a new commercial centre is a possible investment opportunity.

The plan is to create a revolving capital pool that will also pay dividends to investors who join the co-operative, allowing local residents to take a proactive role in building their community for the next generation.
