Diversifying portfolio remains best bet for investments

The latest surge in Canadian nationalism sparked by the escalating trade war with the Americans has made Buy Canada and patriotism top of mind for many of us but that might run into some head winds next time you sit down with your financial advisor.

When we think Buy Canadian that can also mean buy Canadian securities – things such as stocks and bonds – but we also receive advice from our financial professionals saying: diversify your portfolio. Buy some global too.

That point was driven home by a StatsCan report this week on just how much foreign investment we have in our portfolios and the degree foreigners hold Canadian securities in their portfolios.

It turns out the second quarter of this year was not just a good one, it was a great one for Canadians holding international assets. That portfolio value grew by nearly half a trillion dollars in those three months. That was the biggest gain in history.

While the Canadian stock market rose six-percent in that period, the US market went up 15-percent, Europe gained 14-percent and Japan moved up an astounding 37-percent.
