The electorate is never wrong we are told. Finding what is right in yesterday’s election result will take political scientists every waking hour between now and the next election.
A seemingly undecided electorate spread across the second largest country in the world somehow managed to give both of the major parties an equal share of the popular vote. This despite wanting to create a strong government to stand up to President Trump: the electorate’s message is, today, unclear.
For business the story is equally clouded.
Will interprovincial trade barriers fall to create one, not thirteen, economies or simply be reinforced by regional political imperatives? Are we any clearer on getting a coherent energy policy with the Bloc – which has been unequivocal in its opposition to pipelines through its province – holding the balance of power? Will major projects be easier to complete?
The major political parties have said they will answer those questions in the affirmative but Canadians clearly have made that job just a bit more difficult.
