Employees drawn to leader’s enthusiasm and personal growth

In an environment where employers are finding the competition for talent growing increasingly fierce, Stanley Cup winner turned business advisor Ryan Walter has some thoughts on how to build a competitive team.

Walter was in Saskatoon and Regina last week, speaking with local business leaders on the challenges of building a winning team. As someone who played for both winners and non-contenders, he has a unique perspective on the recipe for a winning formula.

First of all, he says workers prefer to work for learners. Bosses who are not interested or devoting some time to improving themselves are sending a signal to the rest of the team that improvement is not high on the agenda. That is the losing formula – not pushing to get better at what you do every day.

The measure for this attribute is turning “Have to’s” into “Want to’s.” He points to his former team mate Guy Lafleur who was always on the ice 40 minutes before practise. He was among the best players in the world and probably didn’t need to practise but couldn’t wait to get to work.
