Fewer than one-half of Canadians have a will

Retailers have had considerable success in moving their traditional bricks-and-mortar businesses online and the field of players embracing the change to online commerce is growing.

One new one that has been added to the list is a service for those who need a will.

It turns out more than half of us do not have a will. Dying without a will or Intestate means the government will decide who will get your assets – including things as precious as a minor child if you’re the only parent.

It is a topic that frustrates professionals, such as financial advisors, who are among the first to advocate that everyone should have a will. This is often because they get to see all the problems that are generated by someone dying without leaving final instructions for everything from the type of funeral they’d like to who should receive the piano or farmland.

The problem is significant enough that one of the country’s major banks – CIBC – has partnered with the online platform Willful that offers a convenient way to prepare a will for under $100.
