Paul Martin commentary
Even though we are in the midst of filling out the 2026 Census right now, we are still getting fresh data from one completed five years ago. And the latest report has a strong Saskatchewan twist to it.
If you take a drive on Quance Street in Regina, you’ll see a unique fast-food outlet called Jollibee. It’s a Filipino chain and it’s here because of our proportionately large Filipino population. StatsCanada has just released an analysis of this specific demographic group.
With nearly 45,000 or roughly 5-percent of the total population when this count was done in 2021, it is one of the larger racialized groups in Saskatchewan and the largest across the Prairies. Winnipeg has an especially large representation with Filipinos totaling one-in-ten citizens of the city.
This group has become an important contributor to the Saskatchewan economy and social support system at a time when immigration triggered significant population growth.
Filipinos have the highest educational attainment among racialized, non-indigenous segments of the population. They also accounted for nearly 90-percent of all the care workers entering Canada between 1980 and 2021.
