The recent update on productivity in this country shows Saskatchewan is punching well above its weight in most categories. This is an important metric that economists use because it is a way of assessing your standard of living. The more productive a society or community, the wealthier it becomes.
Saskatchewan, according to numbers for 2025, was running about 20-percent more productive than the nation as a whole but it is not enjoying that kind of status in all categories. In fact, in one specific area, it is a standout on the other side of the equation …we are very non-productive in this one. It is government or public administration.
You can take the feds off the table on this one because it would probably rank comparably across the country so this is about provincial and, more specifically, municipal administration.
On this score, we are roughly 20-percent less productive than the country as a whole. In other words, the cost of government keeps going up but we’re getting less for each dollar we spend compared to other Canadians.
