Hybrid vehicles gaining in popularity in Saskatchewan

People in this province are becoming more interested in electric vehicles but they are still relatively rare.

The latest figures on vehicle registrations in Saskatchewan show 13,000 sets of plates were attached to new units in the third quarter of this year. And about 10,000 or three-quarters of them were gasoline powered. Another 1,000 of them run on diesel.

And the rest were electric – either hybrid or fully electric.

Hybrid, not surprisingly is the most popular in this category given the distances we have to drive in this province and the gaps between charging stations. But they are gaining in popularity. From the first to the third quarter of this year, the number of all-battery electric cars added to the fleet nearly doubled to 240.

And the number of hybrid electric vehicles being licensed by Saskatchewan residents has risen from 780 units to more than 1,000 in the past year…that’s almost on a par with the number of new diesel-powered vehicles coming onto our roadways.
