Meet Our New Tourists

It might be worth our time to learn a few Mandarin words.

There was a surprising bit of datum in the latest figures on overseas travel to Canada….that is from places other than the US. And, the tourists who spent the most in Saskatchewan in the first quarter of this year were from China. It totalled $3 million. The next highest was $2 million and that was from British visitors. So clearly China is a big target for us.

But we are pretty small potatoes for Chinese visitors on a national scale. We represent only one-percent of all the money spent by tourists from that country in Canada in the quarter. But, again, they were the biggest off-shore contributors to our national account in that period.

This is, of course, in the winter so it’s far from prime time for tourism but this year was especially challenging as overall trips from international visitors was down because of weather. January saw big storms in the Pacific Northwest and temperatures were below normal in much of the country during that period.
