Mining remains a key part of the Saskatchewan economy

When Canadians are shown pictures of Saskatchewan the image usually involves yellow canola fields or waving fields of wheat. But that photo could just as easily feature a mine.

This is Mining Week in the province. And it is an important event because it highlights one of the pillars of our economy, one that is both world class and world scale. And it reminds us that Saskatchewan is not only the country’s primary grain producer it also is a major mining jurisdiction.

We rank as the best place for the mining industry to invest in Canada and number three in the world. That has attracted major players who are developing our abundant natural resource base and creating 26,000 jobs and 12-percent of Saskatchewan’s total GDP.

The big minerals are potash and uranium. We represent about a third of the world’s entire output of these two elements. These world-class assets are attracting global investment of more than $12 billion in 2023 alone with a further $400 million a year goes into exploration to secure the industry’s long-term future.
