New clean energy project latest capital investment in Saskatchewan

Hot on the heels of Foran Mining’s announcement about greenlighting their three-quarters of $1 billion copper-gold-zinc mine in the Flin Flon area, a Vancouver-based firm has unveiled plans for a clean-fuel refinery in the Belle Plaine area.

The price tag on the first phase is north of $600 million.

The Eaglesledge Energy project will utilize Saskatchewan oil as feed stock with an ultimate goal of generating solar electricity to power the plant which will also include carbon capture technology. Being located in the Moose Jaw-Regina Industrial Corridor also allows easy access to the CPKC Rail main line as well as the Soo Line to Minneapolis and Chicago.

The total project is expected to cost in the $3 billion range.

Capital investment is a powerful catalyst in an economy and a key building block of growth. With major announcements such as these two added to the Jansen mine and almost $20 billion in other developments, the support for Saskatchewan’s latest economic growth cycle suggests it will last for at least a few more years.
