New opportunities open for prairie tourism

This will be the second summer when WestJet offers direct flights from Saskatchewan to Halifax as it repositions its aircraft that are under-utilized on US routes.

Canadians, according to the latest numbers, have trimmed their southern travels by 25-percent, some favoring international destinations but even more deciding to see Canada.

But, if we have direct flights to Nova Scotia, they also have direct flights to us, opening a doorway for Atlantic Canadians to see the Prairies.

The increased domestic travel is more than a chance to get to know your fellow citizens, it represents a significant business opportunity for those in the tourism sector.

Spending, according to a report by RBC, by foreign visitors fell last year while expenditures on domestic travel rose. Tourism GDP rose at an annualized rate of almost five-percent in the fourth quarter of last year in stark contrast to the overall economy which actually contracted.

This is an opportunity to offset some of the damage done by the COVID pandemic is fueled by a growing Buy Canadian sentiment triggered by tariffs and talk of the 51st State.
