Nuclear options looking to go big

Saskatchewan’s nuclear option is starting to take shape.

The next step in the province becoming a nuclear power generator took place yesterday with the announcement that SaskPower and the government will start evaluating adding large scale generation to our mix.

Small modular reactors have been under consideration for a while – now well look at the possibility of adding a large one.

This is at the exploratory stage but provides some insight into the strategy under consideration.

One major nuclear reactor would be enough to power all of Saskatchewan with capacity left for export. Along with the existing fleet plus the small reactors, Saskatchewan would be in a position to become a major supplier to neighboring jurisdictions. We saw just this week that the province was able to find markets in the US when they were dealing with that big snow storm.

For a province that is one of, if not the, most significant uranium suppliers on the planet, the concept of also being a nuclear power generator seems logical. The question now is: how big a supplier?
