It’s been 50 years in the making but we might finally be able to talk about out-migration of population in a different way in this province.
The latest population estimate issued by StatsCanada shows that Saskatchewan exported 152 more people to other parts of Canada than it received in the first quarter of this year. That is the lowest number in the out-migration category in more than a decade. In the same quarter a year ago, that number was more than 1,000.
Along with people moving from one province to another, the other components of population calculation are people moving here from other countries and then the natural growth rate which tracks births and deaths within the province.
On the international immigration side, Saskatchewan gained more than 4,000 new residents in the first quarter of the year – quite a contrast from the loss of 152 to inter-provincial movement.
And on the natural growth front, Saskatchewan saw roughly 10-percent more births than deaths to generate an overall population increase of roughly 2,600 in Q1 of this year.
