Last week’s labor force or jobs report provided a snapshot of the Saskatchewan economy as one that is performing well for working people. We generated 6,600 new jobs in the month of March while the national economy was shedding 33,000 positions.
Here’s another way of looking at it. You could take all the jobs created in the four Atlantic provinces last month and multiply that number by 1.5 to match our performance.
That also translates into roughly 20,000 more jobs than we had at this time a year ago, almost equivalent to all the jobs in a city the size of Moose Jaw.
In short, Saskatchewan is doing alright these days. And this is just one of a few indicators pointing in that direction.
The latest population numbers showed out-migration has fallen significantly in recent months as it appears people who move here in search of work or opportunity are staying here. Some of this can be attributed to capital investment as we ride a wave on this one with major projects valued at nearly $20 billion on the books right now.
