Saskatchewan is still the most attractive place for mining investments in Canada.
The annual survey is prepared by the Fraser Institute and looks at both the policy environment in a jurisdiction as well as how well it is endowed in minerals. The survey found that investment decisions by mining companies are made with the quality of the mineral deposit getting a 60-percent weighting and policy the remaining 40-percent.
Three Canadian jurisdictions made the top 10 ranking this year. Saskatchewan was number three behind Ireland and Finland. Newfoundland and Labrador claimed 6th spot while Alberta is in 9th place.
One province – Nova Scotia – found itself in the bottom ten globally, ranking just slightly ahead of Ethiopia, Russia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The big mover in the top 10 was Finland, rising seven spots to #2. It did so well, Saskatchewan was pushed from second spot last year to third in the 2024 survey. When it comes to the quality of undeveloped mineral reserves, Saskatchewan stands in 21st spot globally.
