Saskatchewan economy better prepared for potential US tariffs

It is well-documented that Saskatchewan’s economy is heavily reliant on international trade but what isn’t as well understood is that our customer list is among the most diversified in Canada.

We are the most trade-dependent of all the provinces. We produce far more than we consume so we must find markets for our output outside Saskatchewan. And we’ve done pretty well on that front.

A new report from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce measuring the impact American tariffs will have on the country’s major cities shows Saskatchewan faring very well in the report, largely because we are among the least dependent on the US market.

Yes, it is still our biggest customer but compared to other regions, we are going to be somewhat shielded from the tariffs because we do more trade with other nations.

The Canadian Chamber report ranked Regina as #37 out of 41 cities in terms of impact. Saskatoon was 34th. Here’s another way of looking at it: the impact of US tariffs on Saskatoon will be 20-percent lower than the national average. Regina will be 40-percent lower.
