It’s been a tough year for students looking for a summer job in much of this country but Saskatchewan young people are doing better than most.
The latest Labor Force Survey which is often called the monthly jobs report shows that young people between the ages of 15 and 24 were struggling to find a summer job right across the country. Some province saw declines in the tens of thousands but it was different here in Saskatchewan.
Saskatchewan employers, on the other hand, added 1,800 new summer students to their payrolls in July compared to June.
Manitoba’s gain was slightly smaller gain than Saskatchewan’s but Alberta had nearly 10,000 fewer student positions on a month-over-month basis in July. Quebec was down almost three times more than Alberta.
Saskatchewan’s overall unemployment rate was five-percent in July but the unemployment rate for people in the 15-to-24 age group was closer to 13-percent… quite a contrast from the unemployment rate for men over the age 25 which stood at 4.2-percent. For women over 25 it was just 3.1-percent.
