It’s a tough market for Saskatchewan businesses looking to hire new workers.
The latest job vacancy numbers are out and, once again, Saskatchewan is one of the most challenging places for employers as well as being attractive for anyone seeking new employment.
There were 17,000 unfilled or vacant positions in Saskatchewan in April. That’s the highest level so far this year and five hundred more than in March and a couple thousand higher than February.
This translates into a vacancy rate of 3.2-percent, one-tenth of a point lower than BC which is tightest in Canada. The BC story is a bit different than ours though as people are departing the coastal province in search of cheaper places to live, leaving employers scrambling to fill jobs especially entry-level positions.
In detailing the monthly report, StatsCanada added that Saskatchewan also has the lowest ratio of unemployed to job vacancy. In other words, the talent pool of available labor is smaller than anywhere else in the country. By comparison, Newfoundland and Labrador is three-times higher than Saskatchewan’s.
