Saskatchewan losing people to other provinces

The latest quarterly population estimates show Saskatchewan is once again losing people to other provinces. This is typical of the trends we see in the third quarter of the year as the summer months are the time we attract the most new residents from other parts of Canada.

But the flow is not consistent.

In the third quarter of 2025, for example, although the overall totals were not in our favor, we were still getting more people from Manitoba and Quebec than we were losing to those provinces. Alberta remains the biggest magnet for Saskatchewan residents. For every person moving here from Alberta, two were headed in the other direction.

And we lost our lustre to folks in BC in that quarter – inflows to Saskatchewan from the West Coast fell by half to 600 folks, roughly 200 a month.

It was a similar story with Ontario. People heading to Saskatchewan from there dropped to just over 1,000 in Q3 compared to 1,700 during the summer.
