One important measure of our standard of living is productivity. The more productive a society or economy becomes, the wealthier it becomes as well. And at this point in time, Canada is lagging in this department, especially when compared to the United States.
But if you’ve lived in Saskatchewan for a while and you feel that reference just doesn’t fit, you’d be right.
The 2025 productivity assessment has just been released by StatsCanada and it shows Saskatchewan is outpacing the nation on a wide front.
Now, this is measured in labor output…those who generate more revenue or value per hour of work are more productive and probably enjoy a higher standard of living.
Here are the latest comparisons. Nationally, across all segments of the economy labor productivity is measured at $61 while Saskatchewan is $73 – about 20% higher.
The top-rated segment of the economy is real estate. That national figure is $390 while provincially it is $530: about 35% more productive. And we’re probably most productive in agriculture: more than double the national average.
