Saskatchewan remains an attractive market for work

It seems fitting to be examining the labor market in the province on May Day. And the latest information we have on the subject comes from the monthly report on job vacancies.

This complements the employment report. We’ll get April’s job figures next week but we now have the vacancy report for February.

Saskatchewan remains an attractive market for anyone looking for work. For every unfilled job on the market, there are 2.5 people looking for employment. That is one of the tightest ratios in the country. Only BC and Manitoba are slightly lower.

While this is good news for job seekers, it is not as easy for employers looking to fill vacancies …they have a smaller pool of prospective candidates.

And not all markets are driven by the same factors. In BC, for example, job vacancies follow high real estate prices. People leave there in search of locales offering cheaper rent. Saskatchewan and Manitoba tend to suffer from optics problems…we’re still not a top-of-mind destination for people from Ontario where the ratio is almost double Saskatchewan’s.
