Saskatchewan to lead in economic growth

This province is expected to be a leader in economic growth in the country in the next 18 months.

That assessment is contained in the latest economic forecast issued by the Conference Board of Canada.

It projects Saskatchewan will experience growth of 1.4-percent this year. That is tied with Alberta as the best performers in the nation. Next year, Saskatchewan will pull ahead of our neighbors to the West with growth of 2.4-percent, a full percentage point higher than this year. Alberta will also experience considerable growth, coming in at 2.2-percent, just behind us.

The report says despite lower inflation and interest rates, Canada is being held back by the impact of international tariffs. Consumer confidence nationally has been at record lows while business confidence has also taken a hit which has put a damper on investment.

For us, the Board says Chinese tariffs on canola products will slow our growth in the short-term but strong fundamentals in potash and uranium point to a stable, expanding economy over the medium to long-term.
