Saskatchewan well positioned to diversify trade partners

One theme emerging from the debate surrounding the potential for a North American tariff has centred around the need for Canada to diversify its customer list.

We have become disproportionately reliant on American buyers of our goods and services and the recent spat over trade issues have driven home the point – we need to do more trade with other countries.

It is understandable that we would get to this place. The US is next door and it is the biggest market in the world so…why wouldn’t we do a lot of business with them?

But it may also be a sign of complacency. Doing business in the US is easy so why do the heavy lifting required to work offshore? I guess this week, the answer is obvious.

And Saskatchewan is well positioned on this front and we can thank the forward thinking of those behind dramatically expanding our trade office network. We have representatives in nine nations. Every Saskatchewan business should make the effort to get to know them, it is not up to them to reach out to us.
