It’s not a term we hear much anymore but Saskatchewan’s annual ‘mega-project’ is once again underway.
Spring seeding is advancing well this year – ahead of both the five- and ten-year averages – as warm weather moved across the prairies. Billions of dollars will go into the ground in the next few weeks in the province’s largest annual renewal project which forms one of the pillars of our Food, Fuel and Fertilizer economy.
There is no doubt that seeding activity is a major boost to the provincial and national economy but it is also more than an economic event symbolizing optimism. The annual risk-on project that relies heavily on factors out of producers’ control – yet they invest both time and a lot of money into the venture.
For a province known by the somewhat pessimistic moniker – Next Year Country – the spring seeding ritual offers a contradictory reality… one where risk and a belief that we’ll enjoy favorable growing conditions and prices make Saskatchewan into This Year Country for at least a few weeks.
