Saskatchewan’s role in ag biotechnology sector

One of the most distinctive economic development initiatives Saskatchewan has ever seen centres on the ag biotechnology sector.

Saskatchewan has always been a powerhouse in agricultural production. But, as the world of science began to grow exponentially, the powerhouse of knowledge at the U of S and the National Research Council’s Plant Biotech Institute became powerful change agents.

In the process, Saskatoon became one of the world’s leading ag biotech centres as industry was attracted to the academic knowledge base.

The organization that served as the bridge between industry and the scientific community was AgWest Bio.

For anyone interested in getting a feel for how the industry continues to grow and fuel agricultural development, this is your week as the sector marks Global BioTech week.

Locally, there will be a series of seminars and educational opportunities. The event includes a presentation featuring Dr. Kevin Folta, often a target of the anti-GMO crowd for his work and writing dedicated to genetic improvements to plants, animals and microbes.
