Smaller Canadian communities today’s trendy choice

Where Canadians are choosing to live is one of the interesting trends to have emerged in the last five years, as evidenced by newly-released census data that Canadian organizations and agencies have started to sift through.

For Saskatchewan communities looking to attract some new residents, this study may provide some fodder for strategic planning.

RBC Royal Bank’s economics team has been digging through the numbers.

It has identified a movement towards ‘resort’ communities.

Basically, more and more people are shunning the big urban environment for the slower pace and intimacy of smaller centres.

When they say ‘resort’ communities, they aren’t necessarily talking about towns on the banks of a lake or even those in cottage country.

They include communities such as Squamish and Kelowna in BC or Collingwood in Ontario are on their list as is Steinbach, Manitoba.

The pandemic has changed our view of the world. These smaller centres are now the fastest growing communities in Canada, not the big cities which had previously dominated the fast-track rankings.
