Stats show this year’s crop was big

It’s no secret the 2025 crop was a good one… the best or biggest crop of their lifetime was a common phrase from Saskatchewan farmers.

And now we’re getting a sense of just how big it was.

StatsCan has issued its November estimate of crop output for the past growing season and virtually every variety of grain, pulse or oilseed saw higher volumes this year. About the only exceptions were mustard, soybean – largely in Quebec and Ontario – and corn for grain… everything else was better than last year or 2023.

Canola hit nearly 22 million tonnes – an increase of 13-percent over last year. Wheat reached almost 40 million tonnes, 11-percent higher than 2024. But the biggest gains were reserved for flax, chickpeas and fall rye. All of those saw yields rise by more than 60-percent over the previous year.  Flax actually went up by more than 75-percent.

The gains were in Western Canada with canola production hitting a new record, led by Saskatchewan with a 16-percent increase at 44-bushels an acre. Wheat acreage was down but production was up.
