Sometimes just talking to your neighbors gives you the idea that Canadians are looking for alternatives to travelling to the US since the trade wars began and the White House began musing about the 51st State. But now we are starting to get some numbers that turn that conversation into reality.
In just the past few days, for example, more direct flights from major Canadian cities to American destinations were suspended temporarily. And then StatsCan came out with traffic counts at the border last month.
The number of Canadians returning home by car in April was down 35-percent compared to last year. April is a big one to track because this generally includes Snowbirds who spend extended periods in the sun, usually returning in late March or April.
The number returning to Canada by air is also down – about 20-percent – as we look for other destinations.
From the American side, reports suggest international tourism travel to America could take a $90 billion hit this year as Canadians are not the only ones letting their wallets do the talking.
