Talking about your money matters helps with mental health and confidence

This is financial literacy month in Canada.

This has long been an important topic to those in the business world. After all, money matters are pretty much a core item for businesses and their shareholders.

But it is also one of those taboo topics….something you just don’t talk about. Especially in families.

And that is the theme of the month this year – Talk About It.

The federal government is pushing Canadians to learn through talking. They say simple conversations about money – whether with a professional money advisor or just a friend or family member – can actually improve your mental health.

And there is research that says engaging in these types of conversations build financial confidence, especially among women and girls. Joint research with Carlton University also shows that having conversations about money makes women feel financially empowered.

This year’s theme of Talking About Money includes a challenge for all Canadians to do even one thing to improve their financial acumen…anything from checking your credit score to talking to a friend about money management.
