The one percent

We haven’t heard much about the top 1% lately but it is still a thing. And in Saskatchewan it is a much smaller thing than elsewhere in Canada.

If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to be in the Top One Percent of income earners in the country, StatsCan has just answered your question.

They drew data from the 2023 income tax returns to find out that you have to take in $606,000 in a year to make this list, slightly less than it took the year before. Also, more women made the list in 2023.

Here in Saskatchewan, the story was quite different. It took only $532,000 to make the Top One Percent ranking in 2023, a figure that was $12,000 lower than in 2022. It was also one of the lowest bars in the country. Only a few Atlantic provinces had a lower threshold.

But here is where this group parts company with the rest of us. A large chunk of their income is derived from investments rather than salary: $230,000 in investment income in this province.
