Time for business to join trade missions

It is time for Saskatchewan businesspeople to earn some travel miles.

Much has been made in the wake of the Trump tariffs about the need for Canadian business to diversify its customer list in order to reduce its reliance on the American market.

In recent weeks we have seen the Canadian prime minister travel extensively, most recently to Europe and the Foreign minister is just back from Asia with new trips planned for China and India.

Locally, the Premier was in China to talk canola tariffs then on to Japan where he joined up with the trade minister who had previously been in South Korea. Then the Minister was off to Malaysia.

There is a trend here: our politicians are doing their bit to broaden our contacts. Now we need business to do the same. Every trade mission headed by a premier or minister should include businesspeople. 10-to-1 would be a good ratio. Politicians can open the doors but businesses with the actual order books are the ones that must go through them.
