Travel between Canada and the U.S. declines

There is no question that travel patterns are changing in this country, largely because we’re not crossing borders as frequently in the wake of tariffs and trade uncertainty as well as the 51stState storyline.

The latest figures on international travel are from May and they show 32-percent fewer Canadians returned from the US in that month when compared to May of last year. Travel to other countries, though, was up nine-percent.

And Americans are avoiding us too. The number of US visitors arriving in Canada in May fell more than five-percent.

If it wasn’t for Alberta, though, that number would have been higher. That province saw the number of US tourists arrive in May rise by 8,000, nowhere near enough to offset the declines of 70,000 in Ontario, 30,000 for BC and almost 20,000 in Quebec. Saskatchewan saw a reduction of 800.

Nonetheless, Americans are still our biggest source of international tourists with two million visits in May. The next largest source of foreign visitors is the UK at 78,000 followed by India and France.
