There are signs that Canadians may be travelling to the US again…but it might just be a false positive.
StatsCanada’s assessment of the number of Canadians returning to the country from the US was up in June. It rose roughly three-percent when compared to June of last year. That’s the early indicator that the Trump travel effect may be easing.
However, when you dig a bit deeper, it would seem we have not suddenly reversed our partial boycott of tourism south of the 49th.
The three-percent gain compares June of this year with June of last year, a time when the Elbows Up movement was gaining momentum. But if you go back a year further, to June of 2024, the numbers are far more definitive.
This year’s increase turns into a near 30-percent decline over return trips two years ago, before Donald Trump was re-elected.
We are still travelling, though. The number of Canadians returning from overseas was almost unchanged in June as we seem to be opting for vacations in places like Europe over America.
