Saskatchewan’s wholesale sector started this year off on a strong note.
This particular metric is often something of a bellwether for things such as exports, as much of what our wholesale sector handles ultimately ends up in the hands of a customer outside the province or country.
Tracking this one is also something of a barometer on how our secondary industries are performing as these figures do not include wholesale transfers of grains and oilseeds or petroleum products.
Even with those exclusions, though, this is still a big piece of our economy. Revenues for this sector in the month of February alone topped $3.5 billion. On a seasonally-adjusted basis, that is slightly ahead of January’s figure and topped the national increase.
Compared to a year ago, the improvement – about 5.5-percent – is roughly double the national figures and better than everyone west of Prince Edward Island.
Part of the national gains may be attributable to buyers increasing their purchases before the imposition of tariffs as inventories across the industry were on the rise as we entered 2025.
