Saskatchewan employers were hard at work last month so the rest of us could be hard at work too. According to the monthly Statistics Canada labor force survey which is also known as the jobs report, Saskatchewan employers added 2,900 new names to their payrolls in June.
The bulk of them – 2,300 – were full-time positions. And a large percentage of that number – 2,400 – were filled by young workers. This has been a particularly challenging year for young people on the employment front across the country so this is a significant development.
It’s certainly one that the province focused on when it commented on the report noting that Saskatchewan’s unemployment rate for young people fell two percentage points in the month. It now stands at 11.1-percent, third best in the country.
One other key finding in the report is that Saskatchewan’s population grew quite strongly last month. We’re now in a trend where population growth – and, as a result, job numbers – are flat but June saw 2,700 more people in Saskatchewan and almost all of them had or were looking for a job.
