The Town of Moosomin is a role model for smaller centres anywhere in the country.
This community of more than 3,000, which is situated on the TransCanada Highway on the eastern edge of the province, is in the midst of a building boom right now. But that is only one small aspect of how this community is executing a detailed growth strategy.
Their strategic pillars include residential development, recreation facility construction and health care. And it is that last one that is especially interesting.
Moosomin has a relatively new hospital. Given its distance from regional or tertiary care centres, they have concluded that air access – for both helicopters and fixed-wing planes – is critical to assuring its residents – both current or future citizens – receive timely access to the best care.
To that end, the community has already raised more than $10 million to upgrade its airport with state-of-the-art aviation technology, something that has contributed to a building boom in the rest of the town.
At last count, per capita construction expenditures were $17,000. Compare that to less than $3,000 in Saskatoon, Regina, Toronto or Vancouver.
