The provincial government has taken a powerful step in strengthening Saskatchewan’s international presence with the announcement of four new trade offices.
We’ve always been an exporting province, but not much of a selling province. We’ve tended to use agents, often government agencies, to promote our products abroad, relying on federal offices to do our promotional work for us. While that didn’t cost anything we also were usually overshadowed by the big provinces – Ontario, Quebec and BC. So Saskatchewan’s story was always an afterthought.
With our own operations, it will be all Saskatchewan 24/7. And for a province relying on customers beyond our borders for the lion’s share of our economy, that is music to the ear.
It will also help diversification. The big players in our province – potash companies, grain traders and so on – have always had the horsepower needed to play on the international stage. But, with dedicated professionals in our camp, now small and medium-sized businesses will have access to the expertise needed to stretch their operations globally, an important step in building opportunity and capacity here at home.
