It is getting a little harder to find a job in this country.
One tool for measuring the difficulty or ease of finding employment in Canada is the job vacancy rate. More openings give workers broader variety and tightening give employers more options.
This metric has favored workers for years, especially in Saskatchewan and the west in general as employers were creating new jobs faster than the marketplace was attracting candidates. Well, that has changed in the last few months.
In the last quarter, Saskatchewan job vacancies, for example, fell from around 24,000 to 17,500. That is still tilted towards workers but the job buffet does have fewer offerings and the situation is even more noticeable in the rest of the country.
The job category with the most openings nationally is shipper-receiver. That is followed by civil engineers, financial advisors, firefighters and banking or insurance clerks rounding out the top five.
On the other side of the story, the categories seeing the biggest reduction are: food counter and kitchen help, retail staff, transport drivers, registered nurses and construction labor.
