Employers in Saskatchewan are continuing to scramble for personnel.
Tracking job vacancies is a useful metric for monitoring how the economy is performing, both here in the province and nationally. What we’re seeing across Canada is that the number of positions going unfilled is declining.
It is likely a sign of an economy that is beginning to slow down but these numbers could be skewed a bit because they come from April when members of a large bargaining unit in the federal government were on strike.
But here in Saskatchewan, we are seeing a different story as the number of vacancies or positions employers are having trouble filling is not falling as the province is delivering a stronger performance than other regions.
The latest figures show roughly 25,000 vacant or unfilled spots in Saskatchewan workplaces. That translates into a vacancy rate of 4.8 per cent. Only BC and Quebec have higher rates. And this comes despite employers adding more than 12,000 people to Saskatchewan payrolls in the past year.
