If you’ve ever eaten an Omega egg anyone in North America, the odds are the ingredients that made the Omega came from a plant on the northern outskirts of Regina.
O&T Farms and its subsidiary Oleet Processing are the global leaders in infusing Omega 3 in food for animals and is increasingly moving towards enriching food destined for our dining tables as well.
The health benefits of Omega 3 have been widely studied and well established which has driven consumer demand for foods that will deliver the fatty acid to consumers, eggs being the most well-known.
But work is underway that will see Omega chicken, Omega pork and Omega beef finding its way into grocery store coolers and restaurant menus.
To meet that demand, O&T has announced plans to double the output of its Regina plant with a $10 million expansion. This will strengthen the company’s role as Saskatchewan’s largest processor of locally-grown flax, a key ingredient in Omega 3 production.
In all, it buys about 50,000 tonnes of grains, pulses and oilseeds from Saskatchewan farms….the expansion will take that up to 130,000 tonnes a year.
