The manufacturing sector in this province has been a quiet but steady performer in our economy that managed to handle the COVID pandemic quite well when compared to the rest of the country.
April, the most current figures we have, was another growth month. Revenues for the sector in Saskatchewan rose about 1.5% which was a modest gain compared to most places – a signal that we have not had to rebound as much as others which were hit harder by COVID. Nationally, April was a negative month as many provinces are still fighting to find what they used to consider normal.
And, when compared to the same time a year ago as the pandemic was coming into effect, the improvement was remarkable – just over 50%.
Again, though, that was middle of the pack as other regions fell farther and now are making bigger gains to get back to pre-pandemic levels. Some provinces are showing gains of 70 or 90 or even 130% as they have a long ways to get back to their traditional levels.
