The month of September was not particularly good for this country’s manufacturing sector.
Supply chain interruptions made it difficult to get certain components while inventories of other parts was building. Microchips were particularly hard to find and that led to automotive sales falling after a couple of better months. That was especially true in Toronto.
But here in Saskatchewan we seem to have a different mix of manufacturing so we did better than the rest of the country. September was virtually unchanged from August, unlike the national figures which were down 3-percent for the month.
And Regina stood out nationally after posting almost a 10-percent increase for the month, largely the result of the value of product flowing through the refinery. Saskatoon’s output, by contrast, fell almost 10-percent which was the largest decline among the major cities.
But it was Regina that was headline story. Its September numbers resulted in a doubling of the year-over-year manufacturing figure with a 105% increase…the second highest increase was 39% in Quebec City.
