Job vacancies and labour shortages are among the biggest challenges facing business owners and managers these days – especially in Saskatchewan.
Some new data gleaned from the census of 2021 show why local employers are scrambling.
StatsCan has identified the five major Canadian cities with the highest and lowest labour participation rates. This measures what percentage of the working age population holds a job. Basically, it is a measure of the potential untapped labour pool that may be available to employers.
And, it turns out, Saskatoon has the highest participation rate of all the major cities in the country. That means it is the tightest labour market or has the smallest unemployed pool in the nation. Quebec City is second on the list and Regina is third. Calgary is fourth followed by Montreal.
In other words, Saskatchewan workers do well here. More people can find a job here than anywhere but it is also the most challenging market for business owners who struggle to find personnel to meet the demand brought on by a buoyant marketplace.
